A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck western Colombia, with the heaviest damage reported around the coffee-axis cities of the Risaralda and Quindío regions. At the time of writing, authorities report more than 130 lives lost and hundreds injured, a national state of emergency has been declared, and search and rescue continues. Governments and institutions have moved quickly: the United States has pledged $15.5 million in emergency funding, twenty European Union member states and Montenegro have offered shelter equipment, heaters, generators and medical materiel through the EU civil protection mechanism, Switzerland has declared readiness to assist, Japan is dispatching a disaster relief medical team with supplies, United Nations agencies stand ready pending government request, and Gulf donors have already moved their first tonnes of relief through Caribbean staging hubs.

Colombia’s air logistics have one defining number: 2,548 metres. That is the elevation of Bogotá’s El Dorado, the country’s main gateway and Latin America’s busiest cargo airport, through which the bulk of the nation’s roughly one million annual tonnes of air freight moves. The alternatives matter just as much. Medellín’s international airport, itself at altitude with a long runway, is the strong second widebody gateway and often the faster customs path when Bogotá congests. Cali, at low elevation with a 3,000-metre runway, is the closest widebody-capable airport to the affected southwest and takes full loads without altitude penalty: for this earthquake, it may be the smartest heavy gateway of all. Closest to the epicentre region sit the regional fields, Pereira with its short, terrain-constrained runway, Armenia and Manizales, the latter frequently weather-limited: these accept turboprops, ramp-equipped tactical aircraft and feeder jets, not heavy freighters. The working architecture is therefore three-tiered: intercontinental widebodies into Bogotá, Medellín and Cali; regional feeders and ramp aircraft onward to Pereira and Armenia; helicopters and road for the final kilometres into damaged terrain. Three notes from practice. From the United States, Miami is the natural staging point: the shortest corridor, deep freighter availability and consolidated aid from across North America converge there, so a Miami shuttle at high frequency often outperforms occasional direct flights from northern cities. From Europe, the continent’s cargo-specialist airports and Madrid’s direct corridor both work nonstop with widebody freighters; Balkan and central European donors move fastest by trucking to those hubs and joining consolidated rotations rather than mounting stand-alone flights. From Japan and the Gulf, the distances force a technical stop, Anchorage on the Pacific great circle, Iberia or West Africa from the Middle East; the stop costs two hours and enables full payload, a trade every experienced planner takes. And the Caribbean staging model already in motion, with relief pre-positioned at island hubs a two-and-a-half-hour shuttle from Bogotá, is the classic architecture for sustained pipelines: intercontinental aircraft feed the hub, smaller aircraft feed Colombia at the rhythm its congested airports can absorb.
